Tarapeeth
Tarapeeth is a powerful shakti peetha, it is here that the eyeball of Ma Sati had fallen when Lord Vishnu’s
chakra dissected her body. Shiva carried her frame and roamed the three worlds, after she destroyed the
yajna of Daksha by entering the agni kunda – Daksh yajna vinashini, she is referred to by this name in many
stotras. Lord Vishnu was worried that Shiva would destroy the three worlds and to end his Rurdra Tandav, he
used the Sudarshan Chakra. Wherever a part of Mother Sati’s body fell, that place is revered as a
Shaktipeetha. Not all of them are in current day India, they are in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka
and Tibet/China.
It is said that Sage Vashistha, one of the Saptarishis, could not achieve what he was aiming for, in his sadhna, even after performing severe austerities. A divine voice guided him to worship Ma in the cremation grounds on the banks of river Dwarka. He worshiped Ma Tara at this place and got what he sought. The Rishi requested Ma to reveal her divine form, Ma Tara appeared in the form of the mother breastfeeding baby Shiva. After the vision was granted, she turned into stone.
It is said that this original stone image of Ma Tara, in her fierce form suckling baby Shiva, is camouflaged by the current silver idol at the temple.
Vama Khepa, a great devotee of Ma Tara, attained enlightenment at Tarapeeth.. The samadhi of the saint lies in the cremation ground. It is said, Ma gave him a vision as Chandi or Chamunda holding the skull of the demon Chanda on Kaushiki Amavasya or the dark night of the lunar month of Bhadrapad. The day is celebrated at Tarapeeth with great fervor.
Ma Tara, the Goddess of the cremation grounds is also known as Vama Kali. I have seen miracles here…astounding miracles.
